Woven Origins

The Vitale Barberis Canonico Mill

Region: Biella, Italy
Established: 1663

From the foothills of Biella in Northern Italy, Vitale Barberis Canonico has woven a legacy that spans centuries and generations. The Barberis Canonico family began textile production in 1663 — as documented in the “quinternetto delle taglie” — marking what is today recognised as one of the oldest wool‑mills in continuous operation.

Located in Pratrivero, the mill has grown alongside the evolution of textile craft, industrial innovation and global menswear culture.

Throughout its journey, VBC has balanced tradition with transformation. While the techniques of hand‑weaving, dyeing and finishing loom large in its heritage, the mill also embraced industrial advances: by the late 19th and early 20th century it had installed mechanical frames and full‑cycle factories, enabling exports to markets from Europe to Asia.

The hallmark of its cloth remains the same: exceptional raw fibres, refined finish, and a clear lineage of craft knowledge passed down through thirteen generations of the Barberis Canonico family.

As the creative director, Francesco Barberis Canonico frames the ethos: “The vision for the future is more sustainability, innovation and care for the people who work here.”

This thoughtful mindset underpins the brand’s textile offer: from robust flannel wools to ultra‑refined tropical weaves, each fabric offers wearability, longevity and a quiet sophistication that speaks of craft, not loud branding.

Sustainability and conscientious production are not afterthoughts at VBC—they are integral. The mill holds certifications such as the Responsible Wool Standard and Responsible Mohair Standard, uses 100 % renewable electricity, recovers and recirculates water, and publishes a detailed Sustainability Report outlining its environmental and social commitments.

The picture of luxury here is not only in the drape of the cloth but in the integrity of the process behind it.

Choosing fabric from Vitale Barberis Canonico means selecting heritage, precision, and responsibility. It’s a lineage of textiles crafted with care, imbued with the legacy of Biella’s wool‑working tradition, yet fit for the modern man who values both form and substance.
